Writers as Visionaries

"Beware of straight-line thinking. At the end of the nineteenth century, shortly before the building of the first subway, New Yorkers believed that the city could never grow to a million people, because there wouldn't be enough room to stall the horses. The future will not be just the extension of present conditions, and writers and other artists have to tell us what it will be because they are the visionaries who can see it."

—Michael Larsen, How to Get a Literary Agent (Naperville, IL: Sourcebooks, 2006), 299

Welcome to Casco Bay Literary Services

Writing a book? We can help you achieve your publishing goals. We have more than 25 years in the book business and offer expert ghostwriting, manuscript evaluation, editing, and consultation to both new and established authors. Our goal is to use our expertise to create the best possible publishing outcome for you, at prices you can afford.

Our Specialties

We handle a wide range of projects. Here are a few of our specialties:

We welcome imaginative or challenging manuscripts, like intriguing memoirs or projects involving creative nonfiction, serious nonfiction, or historical fiction. Or just anything that's innovative or thoughtful.

We handle many hard-to-place books as well. Do you have a memoir, a scholarly book, a book on cutting-edge political or business topics, or any other manuscript you care passionately about that you've been unable to find a publisher for? We can work with you to fine-tune your book proposal and other aspects of your project to make it more salable. Or our ghostwriter can write or rewrite the book for you.

We welcome socially responsible projects, like books on environmental problems, the social impact of technology, gender issues, ethnic issues, peace studies, or other social or political topics.

"You did a fabulous job editing my book."

—Eric Higgs, Nature by Design: People, Natural Process, and Ecological Restoration (MIT Press, 2003)

Your book doesn't have to be a potential bestseller—just something that offers your own unique perspective and hopefully contributes to a better world. Whatever your publishing goals, we'll do our best to help you achieve them.

What You'll Get

You'll have the benefit of our publishing expertise. We've had many years' experience working directly for publishers. So we have a pretty good idea of what agents and publishers are looking for—and of how to add those key ingredients to your manuscript.

You can expect ethical service from us. Our owner holds a degree from a seminary, and ethical conduct is a high priority for Casco Bay Literary Services. We'll never bill you for any work you haven't authorized, and your intellectual property is safe with us.

You can also expect personalized attention from us.

"Casco Bay Literary Services reviewed my book proposal, and was directly responsible for helping me land my first book contract....What surprised me the most was the personal interest they took in my success. It was as if they had sent their own manuscript off to the publisher."

—Scott Zamek, author of the popular travel adventure One More Horizon (self-published) and of New Jersey State Parks: Camping and Recreation Guide (Stackpole Books, 2008)

In Short . . .

Your manuscript should attract the attention of agents and publishers because of its compelling content and skillful writing. Ghostwriters, book doctors, editors, and editorial firms can't guarantee acceptance of your project by agents and publishers. But we can increase the odds by providing professional services that help you produce a first-rate manuscript.
